"Gold Connections" is the song Kermit would sing if he played banjo on a gilded lily pad. Gold Connections is also a band from Charlottesville, Virginia. Their self-titled EP comes out at the end of next month and was produced by Car Seat Headrest's Will Toledo.
Last year, Pinegrove came out of nowhere to become one of my new favorites bands, partly because they reminded me of bands I loved in high school/early college. Emperor X, the project of Chad Matheny, carries that same familiar tone and honesty that resonates so well with me. Also, his website is a Google Doc and that's OK with me, too.
Enjoying this new song from The Shins is an anomaly for me. On one hand, it's my favorite track from the new album (so far). On the other hand, it sounds like The Shins' version of a Jimmy Buffett song. I don't know if that means I like Jimmy Buffett now or if I just like James Mercer's interpretation of the island escapist? I've probably offended both of them by now.
