The Lemon Twigs
On a recommendation from members of Foxygen, I shared a track from The Lemon Twigs at the end of 2014. At the time, their album on Bandcamp, What We Know, was about all I could find.
Since then, they were scooped up by 4AD, released a proper debut entitled Do Hollywood and debuted on late night TV at the request of Questlove. The studio polish has really opened up their sound and if you're a fan of '60s and '70s rock, you should pick up this record.
After touring on his last solo album, Upside Down Mountain, and reintroducing the world to Desaparecidos, Conor Oberst decided to spend last winter back home in Omaha and unexpectedly, even to himself, recorded a new album with his old pal Mike Mogis.
I chronicled my introduction to Oberst a couple of years ago and I can only reiterate how important his early Bright Eyes records were to me during a time of transitions. To me, his voice will always sound like home, especially on a record as bare and personal as Ruminations.
You can also hear Oberst on a lovely new track by Maria Taylor called "If Only."
Apparently I missed The Party, the early 2016 release by Andy Shauf. Good thing his new music video, designed and directed by one of my personal favorites, Chad Van Gaalen, gave me an excuse to give it a listen.
