I was searching for the right words to describe Valley Queen when I realized that their own words might say it best: Valley Queen is a hybrid of southern rock and Motown, with traces of 1970s canyon rock. Yeah, that should do it. Thanks for the tip, All Songs Considered.
North Carolina's Museum Mouth are set to release their fourth record, Popcorn Fish Guinea Pig, in a couple weeks. Remember when popcorn chicken was a big deal? Do you think popcorn fish is a thing? Or even worse, is popcorn fish guinea pig some sort of strange gastropub concoction we don't know about in the Midwest?
Last fall, I watched Portland local (native?) Haley Heynderickx open for Ought at a small venue called Bunk Bar. I was pleasantly surprised with her set, because during my pre-show research I could only find videos of Heynderickx playing acoustic sets. So when she busted out some righteous rock numbers with a full band, I made a mental note to keep an eye out for those releases. It looks like I'm only three months behind on the release of her EP.
Hopefully she goes on tour soon and stops through Sioux Falls.
Car Seat Headrest
Car Seat Headrest are shaping up to be one of my new favorite bands. After years of releasing material online, Will Toledo put out a proper debut last year called Teens of Style. Just a few months later, Car Seat Headrest are releasing a companion album entitled Teens of Denial, which is out later next month. Maybe in late 2016 or early 2017 they'll complete the trilogy with a mix tape of sick beats called Teens of Freestyle.
