Some Music I Liked This Week

Natasha Khan of Bats For Lashes is set to release a set of covers of 1970s psych and folk songs from around the world under the moniker Sexwitch. "Helelyos" is a beautiful Iranian song about the beauty of south Iranian women. As for the name, Khan had this to say to Pitchfork:
"When we were recording [Sexwitch], every time I’d do funny sex noises, me and Dan [Carey] said, we’re being sexy witches. It’s a bit tongue in cheek, we’re not trying to be super cool, but I think it’s memorable. There is something very magical and dark and feminine archetypal force about it."

"The Magdalene" is the first single from Dealer, a new album from St. Louis' Foxing. The song is a quite intimate affair as Conor Murphy shared with NPR:
"I was raised in Catholic school [which] imposed a very difficult stance on the freedom of sexuality. When I lost my virginity, I felt like it was less about love and more about sin. I have really never let go of or dealt with that guilt, which made it dark to write about. I think of 'The Magdalene' as a retrospective diary entry after losing my virginity."

The DIY cover for Palehound's Dry Food intrigued me and reminded me of the Foil Deer cover for Speedy Ortiz. As it turns out, Palehound's Ellen Kempner is roommates with Speedy Ortiz's Sadie Dupuis, which probably explains why both of their new records are so sweet.

WAND releases music at such a fast clip that if someone doesn't share it, you're liable to miss it. So, here you go! Their new album, 1000 Days, is out later this month.

Car Seat Headrest

Matador will release, Teens of Style, the debut album of Car Seat Headrest in late October. It's the moniker of Will Toledo, who has already released 11 straight-to-internet albums in the past five years.  And while the name "Car Seat Headrest" grabs your attention, if my name sounded like a Tarantino character, I'd probably record under it. But what do I know?
