Some Music I Liked This Week

If you've ever wondered what an up-tempo version of The National would sound like, check out this new project featuring their lead singer, Matt Berninger and Menomena's Brent Knopf. They've teamed up as EL VY (and courteously provided us with the pronunciation of their band name at the outset of this lyric video) and they're touring this fall - coming as close as Minneapolis.

Girl Band

I didn't know what to expect when I clicked on the music video for the Dublin-based punks, Girl Band. Not only is their video for "Paul" an absolute trip, but this song took me on a near-seven-minute ride with unexpected turns. I'm surprised that I didn't flip a table by minute three.

See for yourself here.

Lou Barlow

I'll admit, I have a lot to learn about Lou Barlow. On a whim back in high school, I bought Dinosaur Jr.'s Where You Been from a bargain bin, because I liked the name, which led me back to Bug, the last album in which Barlow was the band's bassist. I was put on to Sebadoh when they released their first album in 14 years back in 2013. Not to mention that Kids (Barlow curated the soundtrack) completely freaked me out when I worked at Movie Gallery in high school.

I only made all of these connections within the last few weeks, so I think it's high time that I dig into Barlow's catalog, maybe starting with this new release, Brace the Wave, and working backwards to Dinosaur.
